Food Find

Man oh man, I love food!  I used to be a bigger guy...I'd go as far to say that I was a chubby kid for most of my formative years. About two years ago, though, I decided to get my act together and ended up losing 70 lbs.  In the process, I found SO MANY FOODS that are super duper good, and now, are near and dear to my heart.  I'm pretty obsessed with bok choy right now, and pears.

One of my favorite low-fat recipes that I've found recently was this ice cream substitute made primarily out of bananas.

It's pretty much the best thing ever.  You can really add whatever sort of fruit you want to it, and it absolutely quenches all of my ice cream cravings.

The recipe comes courtesy of AmyBites.  I've tried a lot of her recipes and they're pretty much all gold.  Here's my favorites:

Banana "Ice Cream"
Healthy Baked Mac and Cheese
Pumpkin Cake

Well try 'em if ya like, Bikeman page tomorrow!

Die Cut

Oh man, I thought that there MUST be a limit to all the cool stuff that you get to do if you're a teacher but OH MAN, was I wrong.  This weekend, Colleen and I went to the Creative Habitat in Burlington.  They had a deal going on that if you are a teacher, you get a free club membership.  One of the perks to the membership, aside from the discount, is free, uninhibited use of the Accu-Cut Die Cutting machine (!!!)  They had a whole ton of different dies, and I have to admit that I went a little crazy.  They had envelopes, different boxes, fun shapes...it was a blast.

Last night Chuck and Melissa had their going away party, which was awesome, but it's very much NOT AWESOME that they're leaving...

Things I'm in love with:
1) TVP
2) Mug Bread!
3) Conan the Barbarian
4) Sudoku

Bikeman page tomorrow!

Oh my gosh, I watched Hook today for the first time in a while with Beth.  I forgot how much I love that movie.  Of course there's a lot that's really goofy about it, but there's also some really genuinely sweet moments.  If for nothing else, I think I'm going to be saying "good form" and "bang-a-rang" a lot more than I normally would.

Here's a little bit more from the pinball project that Alec and I are working on.  This is going to be a really amazing zine once it's done.  Oh, and it WILL be done.

SCIENCE IS EXCITING.

Bike fixed!

Now I know that all of you are going to run off and get this sweet tat, but hold your horses!  It might seem "hip" and "cool" now, but give it some time!  Think it over first!

Actually, this is a snipit from the pinball project that Alec and I are working on!  Get pumped.

In more pertinent news, I was able to fix my bike this weekend!  The real problem was that my rear cassette was all sorts of messed up, and no onehad a good 5 or 6 speed cassette that would fit on my wheel.  Well, one of the local bike shops up by Norwich had a brand new, in the bag, Shimono 6-speed cassette!  That plus a new chain and it's like a whole new bike!

Speaking of bikes, new Bikeman page tomorrow!

Oh my lord!  The Scott Pilgrim movie comes out today and I have to admit that I've been getting more and more excited.  When the 6th book came out, Colleen drove out to the Borders book store THAT DAY to pick it up.  She read through it in one go and seemed pretty content with how things wrapped up.  I decided the week after to read through all the books, one a day.  It was a lot of fun.  The 5th book is still my least favorite, but the 6th brought things back to a satisfying conclusion, so that was nice.

We're probably going to see the movie this weekend recent CCS grads with Katherine and Tim!

Busy Busy Busy

Hey hey!

*phew* It's been really busy in this neck of the woods!  The last summer workshop just got out!  It was a blast, but it admittedly took a lot out of me!  No rest for the wicked, though!  SPX is right around the corner and I have to get cracking on reprinting.

I did a huge reprinting run back in April, and I thought that it would see me through the end of the year, but OH WELL.  I'm working on a lot of collaborations this time for SPX, so keep your ear to the ground!

I put together a bunch of Whaletownes today while I watched the Conan the Barbarian DVD that Steve Bissette gave me.  Oh my lord!  That movie!  It's pretty much the best thing ever!

"Two or three years ago it was just another snake cult,"  (!!!!)

Bikers!

Here's some bikers that I drew this weekend.  My bike, Scamander, has been having some hella problems with his rear gear cassette and his chain.  I think I'm finally going to bite the bullet and take him in to the bike shop.  I just feel like all the energy I put into pedaling isn't getting returned to me; like I'm always riding through mud.  Bikeman page tomorrow!

Bikeman Page 1

Well, this is it!  One of my primary reasons for giving it another try at this whole web thing is that I really wanted to start posting pages from the graphic novel I've been working on for the past year and a half called Bikeman.  I started writing Bikeman back in college but put it on the back burner for a super-duper long time because I wasn't sure I was ready for a long format story.  I restarted the project once I got my teaching job at the Center for Cartoon Studies.  The comics-making atmosphere was so incredible that all of my apprehensions about doing a longer work vanished.

Bikeman is centered around a man who lives in the forest and herds bicycles.  His love and understanding of bikes gives them a sort of life of their own.  That's what the story is in a nutshell, BUT it's not that simple.  There are a couple people out to get the Bikeman and the family he's made for himself.

I've already completed 250 pages of the story thus far.  My original intention was to complete the book in its entirety and then *BAM* hit the streets and share it with the world, but more and more I've realized that I really couldn't wait to share it.  So, for the foreseeable future, I will be posting 2 pages of Bikeman every week.  One on Tuesday, and one on Friday.  I'm really excited to get this out there and to hear your feedback!

Also, Bikeman won't be the only thing I'll be posting here!  I'll have other illustrations and sketches of stuff I've been working on, pages from anthology stuff that I'm contributing to, as well as what's going on in the vast circus that is Jon Chad.  It'll be super duper fun!

Summer Resolution

Man, I super-duper promise I'm going to be better about posting on my own blog!

I've been teaching classes at the CCS summer workshops, and it's pretty much been that once-a-year wake up call that I get that I need to pull up my britches and be better about posting.

So, here's some reviews.

The Comics Journal - Rich Kreiner
The Comics Journal - Rob Clough
Read About Comics

I've been really busy this summer teaching and doing a children's book for the FBI (?!?!) That should be hitting the presses in the soon future, and I'm pretty pumped.
